Do I still need funnels or mixing palettes?

No, that's the whole point. The wide glass base is built to mix directly inside, so there's nothing extra to buy or clean.
How many polishes should I actually combine? 

Two works for most looks; three if you're adding a glitter or shimmer on top of a base blend. Past four, colors tend to go muddy in real pigment the same way they do in the preview tool above.
